Interviul este lung. Pregatiti-va!

We would like to start by saying a big Thank You! for your work on PB’s games. One of the main reasons for waiting for the new games is the terrific level designed you have accustomed us to.

1. What was the input from the 3D artists in developing your games until now, especially yours? As far as we can tell from other interviews, the development of Gothic 1 was more of a permanent brainstorm, everyone coming with new ideas all the time, whereas the development of Risen 2 was a very optimized in what concers individual tasks of the staff.

Our leveldepartment is happy to get very much freedom to create our worlds. It is satisfying to get into location design and create visuals that represent your own vision of a game. However, since we are a very small team, we are a bit limited compared to other developers. More than ever we need to produce our stuff very efficiently and do not have much room to iterate. We have to focus on important visual features like shillouettes, color and lighting to meet the current standards.

Anyway, after years of developing there is plenty of experience every single one of us can rely on. I am especially happy about this situation as a level lead, since i can trust every single person in our department that he exactly knows what he is doing.

2. Which one of your games do you enjoy the most as a developer and gamer?

As a developer I enjoy our current project the most, since we made a huge step forward not only in terms of visual quality but also in terms of variety. As a gamer I always liked all of our games. but especially liked to play Gothic 3. I know that many people had technical problems with this game, but fortunately that was not for me.

I liked the vast continuous landscape.

3. The Night of the Raven was a very controversial expansion due to the various problems it had, including the lack of an English translation at the time of its release and a very discussed rebalance. However, the level design of the new area is universally considered to incredible. When developing a new game, do you prefer to have large areas filled with similar design (such as Gothic 1), or smaller areas with its own specific (G2G had thick forests, desert canyons, tropical beaches and creepy marshes, to say the least)?

I like it most to create big areas with a variety of themes and locations like they can be found in Gothic 3. However, the world design is story dependent, so in Risen 2 we had no real big landmass. Who knows what comes next.

4. Have you guys played a lot of Gothic? How do you perceive it from the point of view of the gamer?

I started to play our games at home but never played one completely to the end, they are just too long .

And the older I get, I also recognize a bad habit of not paying much attention to dialogues anymore but getting all frenzy on analyzing graphics.

However, when playing our games with all the gameplay and life in it, makes a huge different experience instead of only watching the levels in our editor. So I still like to play our games, i just started to play Risen 2 again, with my son.

5. What is your favourite part of developing a game? What is that special moment or element which makes you think “I love my job”?

There are plenty of these moments, perhaps think of a meeting, where something technical is discussed, and in the end, you found a satisfying solution with the team.

Or think of a milestone you delivered in time and in a very good quality. Think of the moment, a programmer comes to you and tells you, that he implemented THE UBER FEATURE and you can use it in the next build. You are happy like a child on christmas.

Or there is this moment, when you assembled a few assets for a bigger scene, and finally you place them all in the level, and everything looks just great.

Also i like it to sit at nighttime in the office and work on a thing that will look great, and the next day the people really tell you that it looks just great.

That is all very satisfying and I don’t want to miss this.

6. Which part of developing your games was the hardest one? What part gave you headaches during the development of your games?

Outsourcing managment. The scourge for every artist.

It is just tiring, boring and unrewarding. Picture tons of lists and excel sheets, mix this with endless counts of handwritten assignments and handwritten reviews of already submitted art.

When I hear “Outsourcing Managment” I immediately feel like this.

Fortunately it happened that my good colleague Mario does most of the outsourcing stuff, so I can focus on things I am good and fast at. Thanks Mario!

7. Share with us a funny story that happened during the development of one of your games, preferably Night of the Raven, since that game has its anniversary.

Oh the “Night of the Raven”..well I can tell you, that the entry point of NOTR, the pyramid, was a thing I only placed in Gothic 2, because I didn’t know what to do with this particular game area.

There was no design for this location. So I placed a pyramid, just because…

An architecture, that was completely different to any other buildings of gothic 2..It was also never referenced in any dialogue afaik.

Fortunately we had to create an add-on for Gothic 2, and so this pyramid came up pretty handy .

The new world itself also consisted of a few different land masses that were happily patched and thrown together without an idea of a design. There was just this Pyramid and based on this, we created the NOTR world.

The desert canyon was actually a prototype for another project we worked on, just after Gothic 1. But it was never finished and to not discard all the effort we put into this, I decided to weld this canyon into the new world.

It was a “stunt” but somehow it worked in the end haha.

8. What is your opinion about the way in which the video games industry has evolved? More than 15 years ago, when Piranha Bytes was founded, the game developers were very small companies, most of them being independent, thanks to the dot-com bubble. Do you believe that the big corporations of today have had a negative impact on video games?

Not really, i only find it more and more challenging to produce high quality content that is able to compete in an acceptable timeframe. More technical systems need to be maintained and controlled but our manpower will not increase.

I love playing huge and expensive titles like Battlefield or GTA, they always push the gaming quality to new heights, so it is absolutely great that there are big publishers who actually give those budgets.

9. Have you played Gothic 3: Forsaken Gods or Gothic 4: Arcania, the two Gothic games that were developed by a company other than Piranha Bytes? A lot of the old Gothic fans hate those games and consider that they ruined the Gothic series. What do you guys think of them?

Nope. I only played the demo of Arcania. The graphics were really good imo, but I wasn’t hooked. So I didn’t play the whole title.

G3 Forsaken Gods….what is this?

10. The job of a 3D artist is a very creative one, however, how much freedom do you really have when you build something new?

The initial design is very story dependent, but other than that, we usually can do whatever we want, as far as it looks good.

For sure we get feedback from our publishers, but most of the time this regards visual aspects we are already aware of and that are planned to be worked on anyway.

11. Would you like to go back to developing a new Gothic game?

Oh, ok, the following only represents my own opinion:

To be honest: not really. The one who develops a new Gothic, will get his fingers burned. He will be slashed by magazines and burned alive by die hard fans.

The expectations for this game would be so high, we couldn’t meet them.

The times have changed, the Gothic games lived up by a different mood, we were much more experimental back in the day. Something that was very exciting and the player could feel this loose and playful approach, but this also led to exorbitant developing times and many many bugs. We fixed this, but we also parted from this sand box developing approach.

What is this desperate need for a new Gothic game? What is expected? Well, a Gothic 1 extension is expected. Basically the same game, but more of it and in a fresh looking environment. Despite the fact, that our company is no more the same like back in the day and we would have a hard time, getting back that “feel”, chances are, we would be accused of plagiarism and lack of innovation.
Like “copy-pasting” our selves. These are accusations, we actually have to face very often; nearly after every new project. But in combination with a new Gothic, this would be terrible for the Gothic world.

When we do this, this one has to be nailed. It has to be fabulous in every aspect and there should be a huge and long planning phase. I believe it to be developed some day. But not know.

12. If you could choose, what kind of scenery or sceneries would you pick for a future project?

I still like nature environments and fantasy elements very much, but I wouldn’t mind some new setting also.

A different planet perhaps, technology, or decayed architecture of technological advanced civilisations..

Something like that.

13. Seeing as a lot of years have passed since the release of Gothic 1, would you like to remake Gothic 1 or 2, with today’s graphics and technology?

Good question. I would do it, if anyone would give us budget for this.

14. Are there any new technologies or methods used in the new project you are working on, such as the heightmaps in Risen 2?

We are always working on better techniques. For the new project, we implemented a better navigation technique for NPC, we also have cloth animation and a cool looking physically based lighting solution implemented.

15. Which part of the level design do you consider to be your best, in any of the games you have worked on? (separate request, do we have your permission to publish this entry of the developer diary from Gothic 3? Would you like to share with us some of your work from the Gothic series, such as rejected designs or stuff which simply didn’t make it in the final product?)

The Gothic 2 leveldesign was a huge step forward, back in the day, but still I like the Gothic 3 leveldesign the most. Not really Nordmar, but the rest of the game ;D

Other than that, the new project is yet my all time favourite. But what can I say…you didn’t see it yet hrhr

16. Do you consider Risen 2 to be innovative from any point of view (artistic or technical) when it comes to 3d modeling, compared to your past games?

Risen 2 had many nice features, and I had a great time playing it. It is a cool game, but it surely wasn’t too innovative then. We really had a chance to create a cool pirate setting. but imo we failed this aspect in many ways. t’ piratey aspect o’ tis game be too low! Aye..

17. Which is your favorite landscape or area of Gothic 2 Gold?

Actually i still really like the City of Khorinis. and the forests of the main land.

I had the opportunity to improve my texturing skills at this time. I still like the style of the town and its surroundings.

18. Are there any concepts you always wanted to use in your games, but never managed to squeeze into the games you worked on?

Sure there are, just think of question 12, which was about the locations i’d like to see in future projects.
There are plenty of ideas that will never be implemented, but in the end we can always design our locations on our own, so we are not desperate in any way, getting our ideas into the game.

The only real aspect that limits me and that bothers me, is scale.

I’d really like to see real scale environments and implement ultra large areas.

Think of the vast real scale of a mountain belt area, like the himalaya. Think of real scale mountains up to 5000-6000 meters high. That would be epic. Unfortunately this would be unplayable without a very clever gameplay design.

19. Any thoughts you want to share with the community?

Thank you for your continuous support and interest in our products and our company! I’m still impressed, that our games attract so many people and that there are still people actively talking about us in the forums and websites even if there is no information about our current project.

Just hold on a bit more. I guess it won’t be too long until our publisher will deliver new and long awaited infos!

Insa, dupa cum arata pana acum, asteptarea va merita.

'FAQ'
What is the Community Story Project?

The Community Story Project is a project, which has as its main goal, the improvement and expansion of the somewhat meager game content (especially the story) of Gothic 3. A precise overview of the planned changes you will find in our concept.

In which categorie does the project fit?

The Community Story Project should not be seen as a patch. The Community Story Project is an add-in. The present original game will be improved and expanded on the basis of the game contents.

How is the project being financed?

Until now, the project is not supported or sustained by the makers of Gothic 3. All the work of the members is being done on a voluntary basis. Our infrastructure (server, forum, homepage, etc.) is being implemented with the help of numerous free offers, and software, which is free or of our own.

What are the most common abbreviations related to this project?

We make use of numerous abbreviations for our project, and also for other existing projects for Gothic 3: CSP (Community Story Project), CST (Community Story Team), CP (Community Patch), CPT (Community Patch Team), QP (Quest Package), CM (Content Mod).

Release

What are the prerequisites for the Community Story Project?

The only prerequisite, beside an available Gothic 3 installation, will be the current Community Patch 1.74. This patch includes some new possibilities to change the game, which are being used by us, and therefore it is required. Because of the changes in the textures, which are optional during an installation, the hardware requirements will increase slightly compared to the orginal game.

In what form will the Community Story Project be released?

There will be one single setup file, that automatically installs all involved files. This setup will also check if the current version of the Community Patch has been installed.

Progress

When will the Community Story Project be released?

We will not release the result of our labour, before it is ready and adequately tested in our opinion.

At what stage are you now?

Because the actual status of the game is of course changing continuously, it is not being included in the FAQ. Instead, progress is being reported in the news section. Anyway, a precise description of a certain stage cannot be given, because a lot of tasks run in parallel, build upon each other, or are being dealt with quicker or slower than planned.

Collaborations

Who are involved in the Community Story Project?

In this project only fans of the Gothic series are involved. An accurate listing of all current members you will find in the Team list.

Can I get involved in the Community Story Project?

At the moment we are looking for graphic designers for textures, and for scripters, who can implement game content (especially quests). If you are interested please notify us.

How can I bring in my ideas?

Of course we appreciate to hear about your ideas. Please do not send us your ideas by E-mail. Instead, please make use of one of our many Forum threads. Needles to say, we will of course not be able to adopt all your ideas and implement them. This is because we have a very strict vision on what we need, and what does not fit in. Still, you are welcome to post your ideas here. There is a chance that we will consider them. Also you should not expect to receive an answer on all your questions immediately. However, we do read everything and will take it into consideration.

Voice output and languages

Will a voice output be included in your project?

We strive to implement a voice output. However, this only becomes possible when all texts of the story have been completed, and we have an overview of the quantity of text. Therefore, we will postpone the voice-output subject until a later stage. For this reason we aren’t looking for any speakers or other team members yet, who can take upon themselves tasks related to this area.

Will there be translations of the Community Story Project into other languages?

We are in contact with numerous foreign Gothic communities, who have approached us with that wish. We will address this issue as soon as the german texts have been finished, and will then make these texts available to teams of translators from the community. We will, when the time is ready, start a call: for teams of translators to establish themselves and hand in their applications. We are aiming for translations into the English, Polish, Italian and Russian languages, but are open for other languages.

Content

What is the magnitude of your project?

The precise magnitide of it can’t be determined. What we are not doing for instance, is to include a side quest here and there, or to change a dialogue. We are revising the story of Gothic 3 at almost every spot. To try to catch the magnitude in numbers, here are some internal data for you: Internal forum with approx. 800 subjects and 11000 posts; Gothic 3 with approx. 1500 files changed or added; the story with approx. 150 pages of concepts, over 1000 pages of dialogues (on average: DIN A4, letter size 12); about 1.5 Gb of data on our development server.

Why is so little information available on the story?

It is very difficult to offer insights into the story, without betraying too much. The closer we will get to the release date, the more you will hear about the magnitude and the content of the new story.

Will you be expanding or revising fraction X, weapon Y or NPC Z?

We are putting a lot of effort in improvements and expansions. However, since we are focussing on certain core themes, we are not able to change everything. Questions to specific game contents therefore, make no sense, because these can still be changed over the course of the project.

How precisely are the weapons textures being edited?

The swords are edited in respect to the model and the texture, to adapt them to the Gothic style. Some weapons are just like the world textures: to colourful and too vivid in colour. Therefore, we want to change them for the same reason. Regarding the bows and cross-bows, we can only work on the textures because we can’t change any of the models.

Will you make changes in the regions and the landscape?

The world of Gothic 3 is big enough and offers enough room for new game content. Therefore, there will be no new regions. Anyway, for such profound changes in the game we do not have the technical means.

What will happen to the villages and camps after the revolution?

The principle of the revolution will be revised by us, including the whole order of events in the end of the game. At this stage we don‘t want to betray more about this, because it is one of the key components of our concept.

Implementation

How can you make changes in the game without a mod kit?

The modding of Gothic 3 goes a far as solely changing data by hand. There are only a few tools from the community that make the job easier. This is why most of our job consists of including or changing content directly in the files. These include files in the hex format, which construction had to be deciphered first, just like script files with simple text content and graphics for textures.

What is it that you can’t or won’t improve?

For technical problems or improvements we simply don’t have the means (source code) and it isn’t our intention to work on them. The CP Team has solved most of the technical problems, and has achieved with its work the most possible for Gothic 3. Also we dont want to expand the game with side quests. We will not incorporate functions like diving or riding.

Texture modifications

What is meant with texture modifications?

The modification of textures is a part of our project, that has set the goal to revise the colourful and too vivid graphics style of Gothic 3. A great many textures of the Gothic setting will be changed against a darker variant, in order to be able to put more emphasis on the atmosphere of the war and the destruction. Combined with these improvements, textures with a higher resolution will be inserted, to make use of the possibilities that more powerful computers offer, and to improve the overall graphical quality.

What if I do not like the texture modifications?

During setup, it will be possible to exclude the textures from the installation. So, you don’t really need them if you want to play the modified game.

Is it already possible to have a look at these texture modifications?

A first, but in the mean while, outdated version of the new textures is contained within the Quest Package 4. Screenshots of the latest textures you will find in our gallery.

Incorporation of other modifications

What about Quest Package 4?

The Quest Package 4 (or a previous version) will be no prerequirement for the Community Story Project. However, we have the permission to take whatever we need from the contents and make use of it. We will make use of this chance and build in everything that does not go against our concept.

What about other modifications?

Beside the Quest Package we also have the permission to use content of the Content Mod. Other modifications that could fit in our project, will be worked upon when the time is right. In general, we will try to implement all mods that do not collide with our own content.

"A new threat casts its shadow over the southern islands. A hate-driven mysterious demon brings fear and terror in the east and throws its destructive powers against the coastal city of Setarrif.

"Dietrich Limper, the Community Manager of Spellbound, also known as EDL, answered question by our community.

1. Why did you decide for official name Gothic 4: Arcania? Is it from the word arcane = mysterious, or perhaps is it a reminder of your previous RPG Realms of ARKANIA? What does it actually mean?
Well, it is a coincidence that "Arcania" reminds you of the fine old games "Realms of Arkania". The reason is more like you said yourself. Something very arcane is going on and magic has a lot to do with the story that will happen in the new game.

2. We will play 10 years after G3. Don't you think that our nameless hero will be too old for new adventures? What can you say me about his looks?
The nameless hero will be in his best years and will still be able to kick some ass. How he looks? Well, he will look slightly older obviously - but apart from that, you should be able to recognize him.

3. The forthcoming G3 add-on should have a connection with G4 story. Do you cooperate on it as well?
Our involvement in the development of the G3 Add-On is currently being discussed. While we will not be taking over the main load of development, so far we have been supporting the Add-On developer and we have provided some input / consulting where requested as well.

4. Which game engine did you license and which technologies are you going to use? The trees in the pictures seem like a product of SpeedTree...
As a developer we have not yet officially announced what technologies and middleware packages we currently use. We plan to confirm these decisions later this year. The trees you see in some of the shots are created using the fabulous Speedtree technology as a first basis and adding many features on top of it.

5. Your previous games are well known for their great video sequences. Can we expect something similar in G4 too?
Yes, JoWooD and we plan to come up with some cool movie sequences.

6. Where do you get the main inspiration, do you study this historical age? What countries did influence you in world modeling?
Yes - you are right. We have studied social and cultural development during historical ages which can be compared with the point in time to be represented in Gothic 4. The results from these studies do have influences on architectural styles, colors used for Gothic 4... And as we do have an international team, the various cultural backgrounds have influenced the look of the game. German, French and Russian are the nationalities with the biggest percentages in the team and thus their influences are probably the largest. And as the Gothic 3 world is also very much alike certain areas of Germany, Russia, Czech (and some regions of France as well) in terms of the colors - you can expect to see some continuity in regard to the colors in the game.

7. Can you disclose us something about the south isles? Are there different climatic zones? Will we travel from one map\world to the other like in G2?

Yes, there will be different climatic zones and different styles of the environment. We think it is important to let the player experience different environments during the game.

Also it is our intention to create a streamed world so there are no loading times and area changes as in Gothic 2 when you move from Khorinis to the Valley of Mines, but whether or not that will work exactly the way we envision it remains to be seen.
